Mask Update

Feb. 25, 2022
RSD Families,
I wanted to share an important update regarding masking in our schools.
As you know, last week the school board voted in favor of a resolution that directed district staff to create a plan by Wednesday, March 2 that would make masks optional – nearly a month ahead of the state’s original plan to end required masking in schools. The state on Thursday announced it will end masking requirements for all indoor spaces, including schools, on March 19. Due to the state’s announcement on Thursday, the board is meeting on Monday to discuss its original resolution.
Also this week, our district received notices from both the Redmond Education Association, which represents teachers, and the Oregon School Employees Association Chapter #84, which represents classified employees like bus drivers, nutrition staff and education assistants. Those notices demand to bargain on their contracts as a direct result of the board’s resolution, which creates a change to working conditions. The unions are within their rights to demand to bargain because of this change.
During the bargaining process, the current working conditions – including the requirement that students and staff wear masks inside our schools – must remain unchanged. That means that, despite the board’s resolution, all students and staff will be expected to continue wearing masks until the bargaining process is complete, which will likely last beyond March 2.
As a result, masks will continue to be required for all students and staff until this process is complete. We will let you know as soon as there is a change to this policy.
Thank you for your patience.
